Probable conventional

Light over Garfield, AR

A conventional explanation is favored by the record but was never formally confirmed.

The report, as filed

Seen a military aircraft east of Garfield Arkansas. Had a blinking white aircraft light. Was definitely not civilian. Extremely high altitude, and moving at a high rate of speed. It was out running the engine exhaust cloud trail by a long distance before the exhaust trailer would appear behind the aircraft. Sound barrier breaking speed. It's quiet living in the country and never heard a sound. I tracked the aircraft appearing in the sky east of Garfield Arkansas. The flight path was southwest in direction. Total time I was able to track with just my eyes was all of 1 minute, minute and a half at most. Fastest moving aircraft I've ever seen. Fast and silent. It was military, not civilian. [NUFORC annotation: Aircraft - Probable]

Held as-reported from National UFO Reporting Center (record NUFORC #176521). Witness text is preserved verbatim, including its spelling; nothing is edited beyond formatting.

Ask for the records

What would the paper say?

For a dated, located U.S. sighting, FAA radar data and ATC communications are the records most likely to exist. Through Aletheca, the house instrument, anyone can commission the request — filed, chased, and published in the open, refusals included. The draft goes over already written: the records sought, and the date window they would live in.
