The instrument

The paper trail

This archive does not assert; it cites. The citations come from somewhere: Aletheca, the house's Freedom of Information instrument, drafts the requests, files them, chases them for as long as it takes, and publishes everything that comes back — the releases, the redactions, and the refusals, each tied to the exemption cited for it. Every sighting and case page here routes its "ask for the records" button to the office that would actually hold the paper.

Where the archive can ask

Freedom-of-information law is not an American peculiarity. A sighting's location routes its request to the body that would hold the records, under that country's own statute.

Find a sighting in the catalog and its page carries the button; the request is commissioned, filed and tracked on Aletheca, in the open.
