Formation over Alexander, NC

A conventional explanation is favored by the record but was never formally confirmed.

The report, as filed

At approximately 6:25 pm Eastern Standard Time in Alexander, NC I witnessed a series of 25 to 30 lights traveling in a near straight-line formation. These unknown objects we traveling from the west, towards approximately 60° - 77°east. I quickly called to my 16 year old son, his friend and my wife to share in the sighting of this phenomenon. These objects stayed in view for about 3 minutes as the slowly faded into the distance. This was absolutely the most amazing thing any of us had ever witnessed in the night sky. The lights were a solid white color the entire time of our sighting and there were no flashing lights. They were traveling at a steady pace similar to the speed of a commercial aircraft. Held as-reported from National UFO Reporting Center (record NUFORC #165737). Witness text is preserved verbatim, including its spelling; nothing is edited beyond formatting.

Ask for the records

What would the paper say?

For a dated, located U.S. sighting, FAA radar data and ATC communications are the records most likely to exist. Through Aletheca, the house instrument, anyone can commission the request — filed, chased, and published in the open, refusals included. The draft goes over already written: the records sought, and the date window they would live in.
