Disk of lights observed silently hovering, traveling less than 40km/h (25mi/h). We were at the lookout behind Whirinaki Beach at around midnight. We noticed a strange droning sound, looking out towards Whirinaki and the sea. We also noticed strange flickering lights hovering over the coast (about 300-400m away). As we observed it, we noticed it was a disc-shaped object, approximately the size of the beachfront houses. It was floating above, 10m (33ft) across. We noticed the object had flickering colours of light traveling along the body. After about a minute of watching the object float slowly southwards along Whirinaki Beach, with an altitude of around 40-50m asl, the object slowed and turned. We heard a strange droning sound again, which sounded like a decelerating ghost from Halo. The object then put out a bright yellow light from the front, which grew in intensity from a small star like spec to a hand held spotlight pointed towards us. At this point we started leaving the lookout and the object disappeared behind the hill.
