Light over Fergus Falls, MN

I was in the car with some friends going to a friends house July 5, 2014 at about 11:25 pm when I looked out the window across a few open fields and a little patch of woods. There was a lightning storm in the distance when I noticed two balls of light on the edge of the storm which I initially thought to be ball lightning. Upon closer inspection the balls of light were acting strange, they maintained a consistent size/shape/flying formation before flying around the front of the storm and around to the back. (They were on the right side then came around the front and disappeared around the left side) Maybe 30 seconds later the lights came back to the front but this time there were 4 of them in a diamond shape. They stopped along the right side and rearranged themselves when the storm really started to light up on the same side. The lights all went single file around the back for a little bit before 6-8 in a cluster came back out to the front right arranged themselves into a V or check mark shape and disappeared up into the clouds. Around this time the car made a weird noise and kind of flickered for a second but it’s an older car so it may or may not have been related. The balls of light were all the same size and color, bright white with a slight electric blue tinge. They were above treetop level and below cloud level but I’m not to great at guessing altitude so I don’t know exactly how high they were. They were about the size of a small airplane in diameter each. (like if you drew a circle around the plane, that size) They were just way to consistent and precise to be ball lightning, they moved with a purpose. I watched for about 10 minutes but they were already there when I started watching so they were probably there longer. I put the location as Fergus Falls, MN in the report thing but it was between Fergus Falls and Dalton, MN but we were a little closer to Fergus Falls if that makes any difference.
