Le 31 décembre 2009 vers minuit deux groupes de personnes observent dans le ciel de Contamines-Montjoie (Haute-Savoie) le déplacement de lumières qui disparaissent rapidement. De retour de vacances, un des témoin intrigué par son observation contacte le GEIPAN et fera une déposition de son observation à la gendarmerie. Il détaillera également dans le questionnaire les caractéristiques des objets observés par tous les témoins. Celles-ci s'apparentent aux caractéristiques de lanternes thailandaises lancées lors de festivités.
