Le 27 janvier 1980 entre 21h 05 et 21h 10 plusieurs témoins observent dans un ciel dégagé une boule lumineuse de couleur orangé. Située bas sur l'horizon, celle-ci semble clignoter par moments. L'observation a duré 10 à 15 minutes pour certains témoins. Une observation similaire a eu lieu le lendemain. La vérification de la carte du ciel montre que ces témoignages sont probablement liés à l'observation de Vénus visible dans le OSO avec une magnitude importante de - 3,9 et une disparition à l'horizon vers 21h10.
