Le 18 juin 2009 entre 23h59 et 00h13 un astronome amateur photographie l'amas d'étoiles M13. Il est ensuite étonné de constater sur plusieurs de ses photographies un point avec un trait rouge qui semble indiquer le mouvement d'un objet. Le témoin n'a pas fait d'observation directe. Il transmettra les photos brutes originales mais celles-ci ont malheureusement été perdues suite à une panne informatique. Ce cas d’observation astronomique est peu commun. Le déplacement observé sur une quinzaine de minutes semble exclure les satellites habituels en orbite basse et au mouvement relatif très rapide. Le satellite Amazns BrzTank (un gros débris probablement) pourrait être un bon candidat ; sa luminosité peut varier s’il est en rotation, comme la plupart des satellites hors contrôle. Mais sa vitesse angulaire de 1.89'/s le ferait se déplacer d’environ 28° durant les 15 minutes de la séquence photo, ce qui n’est pas le cas, puisqu’il reste dans le champ de vue du télescope. Il peut s’agir aussi d’un astéroïde passant près de la Terre ; cette dernière hypothèse paraît peu probable, d’autant plus que la zone observée est loin de l’écliptique où orbitent la majorité de ces objets. Le GEIPAN n’a pas eu les photos brutes pour cette analyse. On peut aussi envisager un artefact optique ou photographique (reflets parasites internes ou externes).
