Le 21 janvier 2012, un automobiliste et sa passagère roulent sur l'autoroute A13 en direction de Caen. Ils observent dans le ciel entre 16h30 et 17h15 un objet silencieux de forme cylindrique argenté et brillant, tout d'abord immobile puis se déplaçant très rapidement sur une trajectoire Est-Ouest. L'objet disparaît en laissant un panache de nuage. Un seul témoignage sera reçu au GEIPAN. Plusieurs hypothèses ont été envisagées pour ce cas d'observation : un avion ou un ballon thermique de forme cylindrique, (gris ou transparent) qui aurait temporairement reflété le soleil. Le GEIPAN pour vérifier l'une ou l'autre des hypothèses a demandé des traces radars à l'Armée de l'air : une seule trace dont la qualité s'est avérée inexploitable a été relevée dans la zone et ne correspond pas au témoignage. D'autre part, le témoin indique dans le questionnaire que l'objet " venait de l'Est allant vers l'Ouest" puis dans des échanges ultérieurs par mail le 22.03.2012, il indique que l'objet venait du Nord-Ouest. L'heure du phénomène n'est connue qu'avec une précision de l'ordre d'une demi-heure ce qui est beaucoup pour corréler avec des passages d'avion, le lieu de l'observation au cours d'un voyage sur l'autoroute est également aussi imprécis. Les avions observés n'apparaissent pas sur les radars et la seule trace radar produite s'avère inexploitable, il ne reste aucun élément solide pour confirmer ou infirmer toute hypothèse.
