Un témoin rapporte une observation faite le samedi 7 juillet 2012 vers 22h40. Il observe le passage silencieux Est-Ouest de plusieurs boules de couleurs jaune-orangé toutes alignées et à équidistance les unes derrières les autres. La description du témoin fait immédiatement à des lanternes thaï : passage horizontal de boules de feu, par groupe, sans bruit, d'Est en Ouest. A Strasbourg, le léger vent soufflait de Nord à 23h, mais de Sud à 20h ; il est difficile d'affirmer que le vent soufflait d'Est à Niedermodern, mais c'est envisageable. Les fêtes privées sont nombreuses les samedis soirs d'été, et beaucoup se terminent par un lâcher de lanternes thaï.
