Le 23 mars 2012 à 23h, un témoin est intrigué par le déplacement silencieux de deux lumières rouges au-dessus des immeubles parisiens. Elles disparaissent cachées par le paysage urbain. Ce cas d'observation a toutes les caractéristiques des lanternes thaïlandaises : déplacement de lumières rouges, silencieux et homogène, selon le vent (vent relevé de Nord Ouest à Nord, de 6 à 15 km/h) , durant quelques minutes, lors d'une soirée de week-end ou fête. Les lâchers en pleine ville ne sont effectivement pas recommandés, mais il y en a en fait assez souvent ! Le GEIPAN classe ce cas "B" : observation probable de lanternes thaï. Le 13 mars 2012 vers 20h30, un témoin observe, depuis sa terrasse, le passage silencieux d'une formation triangulaire constituée de plusieurs lumières de couleur verte-orangée passant à vive allure et à basse altitude. Un autre témoignage sera recueilli sur un phénomène d'aspect très semblable s'étant produit également ce soir là. Suite à une enquête confiée à un IPN et devant les informations récues, le GEIPAN classe cette observation en B, probable observation d'une rentrée atmosphérique de météoroïdes (voir compte rendu d'enquête).
