Fireball over Florissant, MO

A witness account on file, unevaluated. Most of the archive rests here, and honestly so.

The report, as filed

As I pulled up to my house, I seen a bright red-orange ball of light flying in the sky going Northwest over my house. I ran inside my house and yelled "UFO! UFO!" My mom jumped up from the couch and stood next to me as we watched the luminous object move pretty swiftly across the sky. I ran in my parents bedroom and retrieved my dad and my brother and by the time we got outside to get a better look the craft was almost out of sight and flew behind our tree and finally over the cloud cover. It covered a vast distance in about 20 seconds of time and was high enough in the air to go above the clouds. The creepy party about it was that once it flew behind the clouds we could still see location of the object as the red glow could be seen through the clouds for a few more seconds. The object almost seemed to be rotating as it moved across the sky. Witness elects to remain totally anonymous; provides no contact information. PD

Held as-reported from National UFO Reporting Center (record NUFORC #128974). Witness text is preserved verbatim, including its spelling; nothing is edited beyond formatting.

Ask for the records

What would the paper say?

For a dated, located U.S. sighting, FAA radar data and ATC communications are the records most likely to exist. Through Aletheca, the house instrument, anyone can commission the request — filed, chased, and published in the open, refusals included. The draft goes over already written: the records sought, and the date window they would live in.

At 7:45 PM, 48 minutes after official sundown, we noticed a bright contrail in the night sky. It appeared that we cold see the contrail in the night sky, due to sunlight shining on the contrail. The contrail ran from the northwest to the southeast where we saw 2 lights, on following the other with the contrail being emitted behind the trailing light. The lights did not appear to move in relation to one another as they moved to the south east. The lights continued to the southeast until they were obscured by trees.

Saw a big bright red light with a straight line of smaller white lights behind it. It held a perfectly straight line for quite a while and perfectly still in place. Finally moved and the white lights slowly flexed as if in a breeze. It was as if it pivoted with the red light as the head. It made no sound we had the sunroof of the car open and watched it for five minutes, and yes it is the fourth of July. I would have said it was a helicopter but no sound, it was low enough to see each white light in line, also eventually y the “tail” blew as if a dog tail waging in slow motion. It was as if it were some kind of a kite, but it did not move at all for the longest time and the tail was perfectly straight for for most of the time. The white lights appeared to be on the same flat plane as the red light. parallel with the ground. “A dragon-fly” is how my wife and I both described it. Seemed to be over City Hall. It was not a firework, but a stationary object.

I went to take my dog outside. I looked up in the northern sky and saw an Orange circle moving across the sky quickly. Then it slowed and was behind a tree, but it was still somewhat visible. A few seconds later it disappeared. Witness elects to remain totally anonymous; provides no contact information. PD

On January 1, 2015, at around 5:58 pm, there was a very loud, low rumbling sound coming from the sky. It was loud enough that the sky had to be looked at to make sure a big jet, or several copters were not flying right over the homes. There was nothing but dark clouds, with that sound lingering for about 7 minutes before it quit, as fast as it started. Then, approximately 10 minutes later, it occurred again for about 5 or 6 minutes, and upon listening to the sound, searching the sky for this noise, again it was just really dark, sounding almost like the rumble of a giant train, but the weird thing was with the first time, you could feel the vibration in the air. It was an odd experience and was not a plane, jet or helicopter. Living close to the airport, we know the sounds of those and they do not linger with that low rumbling in the sound.
