As reported

Fireball over Incline Village, NV

A witness account on file, unevaluated. Most of the archive rests here, and honestly so.

The report, as filed

I was driving down Mt Rose Hwy, and saw what I thought to be a helicopter with a search light through the pine trees. I rolled down the window to the vehicle, and didn't hear the typical helicopter noise. The US Coast Guard has a station here, and I've seen and heard their helicopters many times, and quickly dismissed this as a one. I came to a clearing in the trees, and got a closer look at the object. It was coming from the west over Crystal Bay on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. It was round in shape, yellow/orange in color, with a long orange and purple fiery looking tail. It made no noise. For a moment it almost looked like two separate objects. It was moving slower than any aircraft that I've seen, and was heading southeast in what appeared to be a downward motion. It then disappeared into the forest. Space debris. PD

Held as-reported from National UFO Reporting Center (record NUFORC #128846). Witness text is preserved verbatim, including its spelling; nothing is edited beyond formatting.

Ask for the records

What would the paper say?

For a dated, located U.S. sighting, FAA radar data and ATC communications are the records most likely to exist. Through Aletheca, the house instrument, anyone can commission the request — filed, chased, and published in the open, refusals included. The draft goes over already written: the records sought, and the date window they would live in.

Before dawn on Friday September 12th, I noticed a small red dot in the sky over Lake Tahoe. I was a passenger in a work truck. I commented to my friend and asked if he could see it. The red seemed to change slightly and then it turned white and changed shape into more of a comet with a short tail, all bright white. At this point my friend saw it too. The object seemed to grow much larger then and resembled a bright spot light shining into a smoke like vapor, like a v shape trailing behind the light. The light seemed to steer towards the south and west from my position on the north shore. The vapor seemed to expand and lighten and the light then vanished completely. Not sure what it was but I will be looking up more from now on!

My wife and I observed the object just south of directly, overhead Burnt Cedar Beach in Incline Village, Nevada, at approximately 80 degrees. It seemed to be highly reflective and was easily visible though seemed to be quite high. It was very small and since it seemed to be holding its position it was not generating much attention despite the large number of people on the beach. I watched the object, slightly above and to the left of the crescent moon for over 2 hours. The object was still there when I left. I have done some research and found that Google was doing some balloon work in the area and may be an explanation for what I saw. Please refer to the web site; please pardon the name of the site I mean no offense. http://www.google.com/loon/ We spoke via telephone on two occasions with the witness, and he seemed to us to be exceptionally eloquent and serious-minded. He has extensive experience in the aviation industry. We suspect that he is an excellent witness. PD
