Rectangle over South Jordan, UT

A witness account on file, unevaluated. Most of the archive rests here, and honestly so.

The report, as filed

I observed a rectangular shaped object fly from South to North (west of me, at approximately a similar west coordinate of Herriman or West Valley) with a small non-blinking light at the front. The object itself was solid black and could barely be seen as it was dark. I only saw it because there was a slight illuminated haze behind it. The object was silent and was either extremely large if flying as high as a plane or smaller and hovering low over the ground. At this same time, airplanes were flying in the same direction (South to North) toward the airport slightly East of where the object was flying. The planes are very loud and easily discernable. I felt the object could be a military plane. The next night I observed this same object, this time with no light at all moving in the same direction, at the same location at approximately the same time. Witness elects to remain totally anonymous; provides no contact information. PD

Held as-reported from National UFO Reporting Center (record NUFORC #126770). Witness text is preserved verbatim, including its spelling; nothing is edited beyond formatting.

I was running and heard some people yelling across the street. I stopped and could see three people gathered by the gas station pumps pointing in my direction. I thought I had dropped or done something and kept running. I looked back and they were still pointing and I looked up. I stopped dead in my run and froze. There were around 15 or so orange lights in a pattern moving slowly in the same direction. They all moved at the same speed. I took my headphones out and watched in amazement and then fear. They were quite high, like as high as a jetliner. Moving west to east towards the wasatch mountains. I had to walk forward to keep them in my view so they didn't go behind a home. I watched for almost 10 seconds before they simultaneously faded out. I just stood there and decided to go back and talk to the people at the gas station pump. I asked if anyone had a phone out. None of them did. Everyone was very quiet. They mentioned it had appeared and faded in abou! t 5-10 seconds before they watched me stop and stare as well. Almost reverent that we had seen this. We quickly hypothesized about what it was but after two or three comments everyone agreed it was certainly unlike anything any of us had seen before. We stared at each other and kind of laughed awkwardly. I continued back on my run and it wasn't ten seconds before a wave of emotions came over me and I almost broke down. What had I seen? Why was it so perfect and so coordinated? I have lived in Utah my entire life and never seen anything like this. I have watched as my home is directly in the flight path for the Camp Williams training base with military helicopters of every kind and this was not anything I had seen. Morin have I ever seen anything moving west to east as this would be exactly perpendicular to the landing pattern of the dozens of commercial flights that line up over my house to descend into Salt Lake International airport. I was white as a ghost when I got home! and my wife askednif I was okay. I told her j felt like one o! f those crazy people in the movies and documentaries who go to their death bed standing by what they saw. That is me. I saw what I saw. I am not crazy. I am not mistaken. I am a God fearing Christian (Latter day saint) and I cannot deny what I saw. Chinese rocket re-entry. PD

Smoking a cigarette on my balcony, and saw a very bright red flashing light in the sky. This is usual in my area with the airport not far. It looked a little strange with only red color flashing lights flashing very quickly and in a sort of circular motion, but I didn't think much of it once it start looking like it was heading into the flight path for the final approach to the airport. As I was watching it it quickly started looking very strange with lights getting brighter and flashing in a pattern I've never seen before. Then, right before my eyes, it turned right out of any of the usual flight paths planes take and started flying east very quickly. I went inside to get my spouse so she could help me figure it out. She was just as shocked as I was (which is funny because she doesn't really believe in UFO's) seeing a craft with flashing lights in a circular motion. It was closer at this point and flying very quickly with no noise and it started an upward motion and quickly disappeared from our view. We talked for a minute and we then saw a usual plane flying into the airport and that's when my spouse was convinced we saw something totally out of the ordinary. Definite cool sight.

South Jordan, UT

On the night of January 21, 2016, I was leaving my place of employment on Riverfront Parkway, South Jordan, Utah, at shortly after 8 pm. I exited out of the east side of the building and headed southward towards the parking lot. As I cleared the building, off to the right, something in the western sky caught my eye. I looked over, and there, hovering over the farm behind my place of employment, were several orange lights. They were rather large and flat in shape, each one comprised of a single light in the middle and two beams of light extending out on either side. The lights were hovering in a somewhat vertical formation that appeared slightly like a sideways W, and it quickly became obvious to me that they were not airplanes because they were not moving at all. It also didn’t seem like they could have been helicopters because they were making no sound whatsoever, and they were close enough that had they been helicopters I would certainly have been able to hear them. Because the lights were holding so still it was impossible for me to tell if they were being produced by one single object with multiple lights, or if each light represented a separate object. As I stared at the phenomenon in front of me, my first inclination was to run back into the building and tell the other employees from my company that were still inside to come out and witness it with me. But then I thought to myself that if I did that there’s a chance the objects might do something in my absence, and I would miss it. So I decided to just stand there in the parking lot and observe. The objects continued to hover above the farm for what seemed like another couple of minutes. Then, suddenly, as if there was some coordination between them, they began to move. At this point it became obvious that I was not observing one single object, since they were clearly moving in relationship to one another. The lights at the bottom of the formation began moving upward so they were more parallel with the ones at the top. The motion that these objects exhibited at that moment was different than I have ever seen from conventional aircraft, as some of them were actually moving diagonally. The closest thing I can describe their motion to is that of fireflies. Then, as the objects at the bottom had reached a position where they were more parallel with those at the top, one by one they began to blink out. Since it was dark, I couldn’t tell if they just turned their lights off, or if they actually disappeared. But, bottom line, they were gone. I stood there for a moment, baffled, wondering what it was I just witnessed. Then I got in my car and drove home. That weekend I pondered over the event. I couldn’t think of a rational explanation for what I had seen, and I wished there had been someone else who had witnessed it with me. Then, it occurred to me that maybe there was. I recalled that my co-worker who sat next to me had left only about 30 seconds before I did. Surely, I thought, the lights were there when he had left the building. So, the next time we worked together I decided to ask him if he had seen them too. His response was an enthusiastic yes. The reason I had not seen him out in the parking lot with me was because he had already gotten in his car and was watching the lights through his car window. We later had a chance to discuss the event more in detail. His description of the event was very similar to mine: The lights were hovering, then, after a couple of minutes, they began to move, and then disappeared. While we were discussing our experience, the girl that sat across the aisle from us began to comment that she and some of her friends had had similar experiences, and I realized that this kind of thing is becoming far more common than it used to be. As far as what the explanation is for what I saw, I am torn. Part of me thinks it could be evidence for extra-terrestrial life, but the more skeptical part of me thinks it could have been a clever hoax. For now, the incident remains unexplained.
