Cigar over St. Petersburg Beach, FL
A witness account on file, unevaluated. Most of the archive rests here, and honestly so.
The report, as filed
After posting the video to Facebook for my daughter to see, I rewatched it myself. In the first few seconds of the recording, the lightening lit up the sky, and it looked like there was a craft just sitting in the clouds.
Held as-reported from National UFO Reporting Center (record NUFORC #121498). Witness text is preserved verbatim, including its spelling; nothing is edited beyond formatting.
Ask for the records
What would the paper say?
For a dated, located U.S. sighting, FAA radar data and ATC communications are the records most likely to exist. Through Aletheca, the house instrument, anyone can commission the request — filed, chased, and published in the open, refusals included. The draft goes over already written: the records sought, and the date window they would live in.

Noticed red/orange flame-like flickering orb assending slowly off-shore between Indian Shores and Treasure Island. No discernable flame trailing but climbing at about 1/10th the rate, with no acceleration, of an average Space-Coast rocket launch. Distant lightning storm off-shore just north of Clearwater Area and was in background of orb. Orb was watched from Grand Plaza Hotel while sitting on beach. No real idea of true distances between storm, orb and viewing location.

Staying at Grand Hotel on Gulf Blvd. Room faces Gulf. Looked out window, bright ball of fire appeared, and began moving east at a concentrated level of speed. Stunned, I grabbed video cam on cell phone and caught it moving upward and east....It...just vanished...Im visiting from Chicago...I wont be the same. I know what I saw.

Girlfriend and I were sitting at the Bon-Aire tiki bar while watching the bay channel markers and Egmont Key lighthouse (roughly 210 degrees from our vantage point), when we saw an *EXTREMELY* bright fireball that looked to illuminate the cloud base that was hovering nearby... If you were to hold a quarter at arm's length, that would be the close diameter to what we saw as the initial fireball (like I said, it illuminated the cloud base). I would say it was in the 3500K scale. It lasted less then a half second, with multiple bursts of light. I've seen military flares... this was not one of them. We suspected USCG helicopter maneuvers up north towards Clearwater (unconfirmed), but the farthest south we saw the helis was due west (270 degrees), approximately 30 minutes before the fireball (only 1 running spotlight on the water). I would base the sighting at roughly 215 - 235 degrees from our vantage point at the Bon-Aire. Did anyone else see this event!? We talked to our bartender and she thought we were crazy!

Red fireball, bright. I thought it was a meteor because there was a meteor shower tonight. It was very close and did not burn out. So I look a video. It was traveling slowly across the sky going south towards the skyway bridge. I kept watching it for around 60 seconds as it travels across the sky. It was very bright and changed shapes like a flame does on a candle stick. It made no sound. Witness elects to remain totally anonymous; provides no contact information. PD
