Fireball over Kaukauna, WI

A witness account on file, unevaluated. Most of the archive rests here, and honestly so.

The report, as filed

On the evening of August 8, at approximately 9:40 p.m., my daughter was leaving my house, and I followed behind to walk her to her car. She looked up as she was walking and commented “what’s that?” I then looked up and saw three bright orange colored lights in the sky with two moving parallel together and another following behind as in a triangular shape. As we continued to watch what I now call fireballs, I saw four more that seemed to originate from a lower altitude and climb higher following behind the original three lights. As the lights climbed higher into the almost completely clear blue sky, each one took its turn fading into nothing. One of the lights seemed to glow longer than the others before finally fading out. As I watched all of this taking place, my daughter had taken out her cellphone and was videotaping. The lights are visible on her video, but are not of the intensity that could be seen with the naked eye. These lights made no sound.

Held as-reported from National UFO Reporting Center (record NUFORC #112320). Witness text is preserved verbatim, including its spelling; nothing is edited beyond formatting.

Ask for the records

What would the paper say?

For a dated, located U.S. sighting, FAA radar data and ATC communications are the records most likely to exist. Through Aletheca, the house instrument, anyone can commission the request — filed, chased, and published in the open, refusals included. The draft goes over already written: the records sought, and the date window they would live in.

It showed up again at about the same time, 1900pm. My wife spotted it. I went down the street to get a better look, it was just sitting there in the sky. A white light with a lite haze around it. Not moving at all, not changing to brite white to low like last time. Sighting of Venus? PD

My wife called me in our bedroom and showed me a strange light in the sky outside our house. I went outside to see if I could get a video of it, but it wouldn't pick it up. Pretty weird though it seen get slightly brite then dim down and then repeat that the whole time we watched. It didn't move from that spot at all.

The 22nd of August, myself, my husband, our dog, and father were near Lawe St and Lamplighter Dr in Kaukauna, where we heard at least 3 LONG sets of incredibly loud sounds coming from the sky without any objects in sight. They were unlike anything any of us had heard before; somewhat like repeated exchanges of gunfire, but much louder and deeper. There were long bursts of booming and rumbling that sometimes appeared to grow louder and closer to you as if it was following you. The first 2 times we were a bit unnerved and curious...but by the 3rd set, we were actually pretty frightened. At first my dog had no discernable response (as she would, for example, to fireworks). By the last set of sounds she was uncharacteristically, whining, sniffing the air, pulling at her leash and panting. Each set lasted from 40 seconds to over a minute and a half. I waited to watch/read local news before reporting/documenting here. There's been nothing to explain what we heard.

We could clearly see stars, and all of a sudden a large, fuzzy, oval shaped white light appeared at 10:42 pm CST and started moving from the Southeast to the Northwest. It moved soundlessly and slowly and traveled in a straight line. There were no blinking lights and no definitive outlines. It was just sort of a large solid glow. It was WAY too big to be an airplane, satellite or meteor. We could clearly see the Big Dipper to the left of this light, and if you divided the cup of the Big Dipper into equal parts, this light would have been about 1/16th of that size. Then it faded away. There were clouds out that night, but this light traveled where the clouds were not, so we got a good look at it. Kind of freaked us both out. We have never seen anything like this. ((NOTE FROM MR. TED MOLCZAN)) Hello Peter, Your hunch probably is correct. The Sentinel 2A satellite was launched on a Vega rocket from the Guiana Space Center, last night at 9:52 PM EDT (Jun 23 01:52 UTC). Coverage of the launch was here: http://spaceflightnow.com/2015/06/22/vv05-mission-status-center/ SeeSat-L received several reports of sightings near 23:49 EDT (3:49 UTC), of what appears to have been exhaust from the final burn of the Vega rocket's AVUM liquid fueled upper stage. That burn lowered the perigee to ensure that the object decays from orbit within a reasonable time, in order to curb the growth of space debris. http://satobs.org/seesat/Jun-2015/0193.html http://satobs.org/seesat/Jun-2015/0194.html http://satobs.org/seesat/Jun-2015/0195.html http://satobs.org/seesat/Jun-2015/0198.html http://satobs.org/seesat/Jun-2015/0199.html Marco Langbroek blogged his analysis: http://sattrackcam.blogspot.nl/2015/06/aurora-hunter-images-last-moments-of.html Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Kaukauna, WI

At approximately 9:40 p.m. on the northside of Kaukauna, WI, (in the country), as I was going outside to leave my parent’s home, I saw what appeared initially to be a formation of fireballs slowly moving through the sky. I describe them as fireballs because they were orange in color and appeared to be glowing. They were also soundless. They were much larger than the stars and planets in the sky; if I had to estimate I would say they were the size of 10 stars together. There were two of these objects in the lead side by side and another 5–6 that followed. My mother and I first saw these objects in the east and they were traveling upward and northwest. They appeared to be flying at the height of a low flying airplane. After approximately 1-2 minutes of seeing them, they faded out, once they got to the same point in the sky, except for one near the middle of the formation, which lasted about 40 seconds longer. The whole experience of seeing these flying objects lasted approximately 4-5 minutes. We spoke via telephone with this witness, and she sounded to us to be quite serious-minded. We suspect that she is an excellent witness. She is a medical professional. PD
