Le 1er janvier 2010 vers 20h10, de nombreuses personnes sont témoins du passage d'un phénomène lumineux dans le ciel. Huit témoignages nous sont parvenus par la gendarmerie : deux témoignages (T4 et T5 sur le PV de gendarmerie) correspondent probablement à l'observation sur le continent d'une lanterne (vu depuis Fouras et St Augustin) mais ne sont pas à relier avec l'objet vu sur l'île par les 6 autres témoins. L'auteur du lâcher de Saint-Pierre D'Oléron est venu spontanément à la gendarmerie déclarer avoir lancé le premier janvier 2010 entre 20h et 20h15 un 'ballon à souhait' traditionnellement utilisé dans les fêtes et anniversaires en Hollande.
