Le 4 février 1997 vers 18h20, une dizaine de témoins répartis dans plusieurs département du Sud-Ouest de la France ont observé durant quelques secondes le passage très rapide d'une boule lumineuse en trajectoire descendante avec une trainée importante. Certains témoins ont observé une explosion en plusieurs morceaux de cette boule. Il s'agit sans doute d'une rentrée atmosphérique, probablement celle d'une météorite.
