Le 14 août 1980 à 4h 45 du matin des témoins observent une source lumineuse basse sur l'horizon. Émettant une lumière jaune scintillante, se déplaçant très lentement, ce phénomène a été observé plusieurs minutes avant de disparaître en diminuant d'intensité et de volume. Lors de l'enquète de gendarmerie,d'autres témoins seront retrouvés : il est probable que ces personnes aient fait une observation astronomique de Mercure particulièrement visible en cette période de l'année.
