Le 17 décembre 1957 quatre militaires sur la base aérienne de Cognac constatent l'apparition d'un écho radar à 15h01 (TU) d'un objet se déplacant depuis 40km et disparaissant à 16km dans les échos fixes. Le temps total d'observation sur le radar est de 30 secondes ce qui correspond à une vitesse de 2 880km/h. Le même jour mais à 15h45 (TU) un autre écho radar est remarqué à 37km et disparait à 25km. Le temps total d'observation dure 15 secondes ce qui correspond à une vitesse de 2 880km/h également. Un rapport illustré de croquis est rédigé par deux témoins.
