Rendlesham Forest

In the small hours of 26 December 1980, security police at RAF Woodbridge — a NATO base then hosting the USAF 81st Tactical Fighter Wing — entered Rendlesham Forest to investigate lights taken at first for a downed aircraft. Airman John Burroughs and Sgt. Jim Penniston reported approaching a small triangular metallic object on the forest floor; Penniston would later describe touching it and copying symbols from its surface. The following morning, indentations were found in a triangular pattern, with broken branches above.

Two nights later, deputy base commander Lt. Col. Charles Halt led a patrol into the forest with radiation instruments and a running microcassette recorder. His tape preserves the readings taken at the landing marks, a red light moving through the trees that appeared to drip molten material, and starlike objects to the north and south, one sending down beams — 'here I am with 40 minutes of tape and a red light that's moving.' Halt's memorandum to the Ministry of Defence, dated 13 January 1981 and headed 'Unexplained Lights,' surfaced in 1983 through a U.S. FOIA request and made the case public.

The MoD's file, released to the National Archives in 2001, records its conclusion of no defence significance, with no evidence the airspace was breached. Skeptical reconstruction attributes the first night to a bright fireball and the Orfordness lighthouse, and the radiation readings to background levels; participants — including Halt, on the record ever since — reject the lighthouse account as geometrically impossible for what they tracked. Witness narratives have elaborated over the decades, and the case now carries both the best contemporaneous documentation of any UK military incident and a heavy accretion of later claims.
